Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy at Lubbock Advanced Physical Medicine

Here at Lubbock Advanced Physical Medicine, we base our work on the body's own inherent ability to heal itself, providing therapeutic techniques that aid these natural processes to restore health, comfort and function. Sometimes there's no better treatment than those the body administers to itself -- and if we can help that process along, so much the better. That's why we're happy to offer an advanced yet all-natural technique called platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy, part of regenerative medicine, alongside chiropractic care and other conservative treatment modalities.

How Platelets Help You Heal

To understand how PRP can help you feel better and heal faster, it's first necessary to understand the role of platelets in the body. These components of your blood's plasma are packed with hundreds of vital proteins, including specific types of proteins known as growth factors. It's these growth factors that make tissue growth, healing and regeneration possible. It only makes sense, then, that the more dense a concentration of platelets there are in an injured or ailing body part, the more efficiently that part can repair itself. PRP is a method for dramatically increasing the concentration of platelets at the treatment site, flooding the area with the extra growth factors it needs for rapid healing.

PRP makes use of your own plasma to set this effect into action. By extracting a blood sample and running it through a centrifuge to separate its components, we can isolate the plasma and concentrate it to make it up to 10 times richer in platelets than it normally would be. We then inject that super-rich plasma directly into the treatment site.

A Useful Complement to Chiropractic Care

Our Lubbock TX chiropractor, Dr. Kothmann, can administer PRP as a complement to chiropractic care, massage therapy, corrective exercises and other natural forms of treatment for:

  • Tendon issues such as tennis/golf elbow, rotator cuff injuries and Achilles tendonitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Damaged ligaments
  • Muscle strains

An initial evaluation can determine whether you're a good candidate for the procedure or whether problems such as anemia, cancer or abnormal platelets indicate a different approach to your treatment. Post-injection soreness is only an inflammatory reaction that fades within a couple of days, with the benefits of the therapy starting to appear after 2 about weeks. Once the effects of your PRP therapy fully take hold, you may experience ever-increasing improvement for up to 9 months. PRP's ability to enhance tissue healing makes it an exciting alternative to major surgery in some injury cases -- and it might do the same for you.
